The problem

The danger isn't the hit. It's the one nobody noticed.

A helmet protects the skull. It can't stop the brain moving inside it. And it can't tell a coach, a parent or a foreman that this hit was different from the last two hundred.

How it works

It learns one person's normal. Then it watches for what isn't.

A lineman takes forty hits a practice. A cyclist takes none. A number that means nothing for one is an emergency for the other.

How hard, how much it twisted, where on the head, and for how long. The twist matters most. It does more damage than a straight hit.

Learn what's normal

Over a session it learns what a normal hit looks like for this one person, in this sport or this job.

Flag the odd one

When a hit is outside that range, or small hits pile up, it alerts the phone or the sideline tablet in seconds.

Why built in

You can't just stick this on a helmet.

NOCSAE, the group that certifies football helmets, says adding anything to a helmet after it's certified makes it a new, untested helmet. The maker can void the certification. No school will risk that.

A stick-on sensor is a risk. A built-in sensor is a feature. The only legal way to get this into a certified helmet is to build it in before the helmet is certified.
